Christmas at St Olaf College

Just returned from St Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota where my son Matt is a senior, a singer and a trombone player. St Olaf is remarkable for allowing students to go deep into choral and instrumental music together. There, beautiful young people practice under the direction of gifted professional directors and conductors the way high-level athletes practice under the direction of their coaches: with focused attention, every day. The performances and presentations at St Olaf, such as the Christmas Festival I attended, are polished, powerful, emotionally dense, heart-breaking and uplifting. Here is a video of the St Olaf Choir–one of 5 choirs on campus–singing in Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim, Norway where King Olaf II (995-1030) is buried.
