The Lion Sleeps Tonight

Following Pete Seegers’s death I have thought about songs he brought to us. Some of them filtered up to the pop world and became hits. I remember falling asleep to music from the radio on my night stand. I listened to KLGR out of Redwood Falls, a few miles north of my house, to KDWB from Minneapolis or, if the night was clear, to WLS from Chicago.

During the day KLGR had farm reports and community news. In the evening, after the high school basketball, baseball or football game play-by-play, there would be music “for the young people”. The DJ must have liked The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens because he played it a lot.  Here is a recording of Pete Seeger teaching that good-night song to his audience.
