in memory of Ron Johnson

My dad was born in Ada, Minnesota on this day in 1929.  I have good memories of 5-hour drives north to visit family there. He played sports in every season in high school and college. His North Dakota State Bison are in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament tonight.

Psalm for Ada Minnesota

We would go up together in the Pontiac
on a highway scrubbed with heat mirages
and ribbed in finger drifts at Christmas.

With quartered cheese sandwiches
and chips packed in, telephone poles
ticked off miles to a small town laid out
on a flat land in crisp broad streets.

The ancestors kept things neat up there
so that spirits and children and the spirits
of children could come and go freely.
