Jean Redpath 1937-2014

Scottish singer Jean Redpath died last week.  I haven’t listened to one of her songs for years, but when Matt was very young, Jean Redpath sang him to sleep.  Her old-world voice was smooth, thick  and foggy, like the coast of Scotland.   Although she never learned to read music, her parents sang to her and played folk songs with her. Jean Redpath made a career of learning and performing old Scottish songs. She came to San Francisco in 1961 to sing with the American folk singers. She lived in a New York flat with Bob Dylan and appeared on Pete Seeger’s television show.  She was a frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion radio program.  It must have been there, on a Saturday evening, that I first heard her unforgettable voice.
