AmeriCorps

Tomorrow I’m off to see Matt in Minneapolis. He is doing an AmeriCorps year with Habitat for Humanity Twin Cities. It’s the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps.

Can’t wait to see him and the work he’s doing. When I was his age I lived in the Philips Neighborhood of South Minneapolis. I worked there with three churches, helping them with their summer programs for city kids and, for second and third jobs, working as a night watchman and as a busboy in a Minneapolis restaurant. The neighborhood has changed in those years. Then there were Native American and African American people. Now there are more Hispanic and Somali people.

Americorps is a civil society program supported by the federal government,  foundations, corporations, and other donors engaging adults in intensive community service work with the goal of “helping others and meeting critical needs in the community”. Members commit to full-time or part-time positions offered by a network of nonprofit community organizations and public agencies, to fulfill assignments in the fields of education, public safety, health care, and environmental protection. The program is often compared to the Peace Corps as its domestic counterpart.
