Yo Yo Ma at Tanglewood
Is there a more radiant virtuoso than Yo Yo Ma? He was the cello soloist for “Don Quixote” Opus 35 by Richard Strauss (1864-1949) at Tanglewood Sunday. The piece brought out the best in Mr. Ma. He hammed it up, interacting playfully with the viola and violin principals, brandishing his bow as if it were Don Quixote’s lance. In easy command of the material, and with a personality like the summer sun, Mr. Ma charmed the afternoon audience which included, just to our right, former Secretary of State George Shultz and German conductor Kurt Mazur.
After the concert Mr. Ma answered questions and spoke to Tanglewood student musicians.
