Basilica of the Holy Family, Barcelona

We visited the Sagrada Familia Basilica in Barcelona on a cool winter’s day. Pilgrims and tourists were lined up to see it. Catholics find their home here. People of all faiths and of none marvel at the genius and Catholic faith of Antoni Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece that still drives the construction of this temple of the creator and the creation.

The nativity façade presents the stories of the life of Jesus.  It’s like a Christmas card to the nations. Gospel depictions in immense and organic detail, with plants and animals framing biblical characters, overwhelm even hard-hearted visitors. I noticed people from I-don’t-know-where frozen below stories they knew as children presented in grand sculpture against the sky. Their cheeks flushed, eyes misted, throats clutched momentarily.
